Does anybody actually think using Instagram makes them a photographer? Like, is that actually a thing or are photographers just making up bullshit for the sake of being elitist?

In my last photo class I used Instagram-style photographs to pose a real argument, mainly because I hated a lot of the people in my class and their air of “I’m more important than you.” In a way, I felt like “Well, if they don’t have to put in effort, why should I?” It was a sort of social experiment, and as I assumed would happen, everybody hated everything I brought to critique.
One of the girls took probably an hour’s worth of shooting of pictures throughout the entire semester. Her subject? Details of buildings. The color was probably the only interesting thing about them. It was almost a joke to me at how much praise she got for this, because there was no reason behind her photos. She had nothing to say with them and no underlying meaning - it was just one of those “looks pretty so it’s good” things. I guess if you take 20 pictures that have no real affect on you but they’re “cohesive,” it’s okay. My project, on the other hand, was set up around the idea that nothing was cohesive.
OH! And then there was another girl who would just scan everything she was doing in her other classes and layer it in Photoshop and said that it was what her brain looked like when she was thinking and working on photography. Everyone was like “OH MY GOD THAT’S SO GREATTTT.” No. It was just as fucking stupid in person as it sounds on here.
We can all agree that it was fucking stupid, right. Art classes really are just a big fucking joke. I mean, really. Don’t waste your time, because you’re probably not pretentious or mindless enough to fit in, and if you are, well, you’re the person reading this thinking that I’m a bitch for saying this. So fuck you.
